Salt marshes

On the Île de Ré, a salt marsh consists of three main groups of basins: the vasais, the métières, and the champ de marais. These basins have been skilfully dug into the natural clay so that water flows from one to the next by gravity. Every day, keeping a close eye on the slightest change in the weather, the salt worker increases or decreases the flow of water between each of the basins.
